Seeing fanart of gender-flipped ATLA characters got me thinking way too hard about story ideas, about what Zuko's story might look like or how the Sokka/Yue dynamic might change.

This being me, of course, the first thing I started thinking about was names. Whether I write the fic or not I will have my names, damn it. (All portraits are from carrinth's lovely art, linked above.)

Girl Aang

You can't give up your training for me. This is your dream, what you came to the North Pole for!

Anang. This is cheating for the most part, since it's simply the modern Mandarin reading of the character's name (安昂).

Boy Katara

If you won't teach Anang, then I don't need your stinking lessons either!

Katasi.
From the Inuit name Ka-Ha-Si, meaning "lazy boy." It's what his sister calls him all the time anyway. His wearing a woman's betrothal necklace would raise some... interesting questions in the North Pole.

Girl Sokka

Did I
want to play warrior? Of course not! But what else could I do when the only man left in the tribe wants to play with water all day long?

Sukka.
From the Inuit name Suka, meaning "fast." I suspect it's where Sokka's original name came from.

Man Yue

My conduct was dishonorable, Sukka. I have no excuse for my deception.

Manyue. Aside from the obvious joke, it also means "full moon (满月)." His friends call him Yue. The word also refers in Chinese to a baby's reaching its first month of life, something he wasn't expected to do. I was also tempted by Tatkret (moon) and Alignak (god of the moon), but it won't do to get too far afield from canon.

Girl Zuko

Oh I see. A deformed girl like me should be happy for any attention, right? Why don't you stand a little closer so we can see how desperate I am.

Zuqin.
I took the first syllable of the variant spelling for Zuko's name in "The Search" (do any of these people spell their names consistently?) to name her "harp" for Shuqin (竖琴) -> Zuqin. The "qin" sounds somewhat like "chin." You can hear it here.

Prince Azul

Hello, sweet sister. Ready to come home? If you behave I'll let you out in time to see my coronation--suitably covered, of course.

Azul. I'm tempted to do more variation, but he probably won't show up anywhere so.

Toph

Yeah! Who's your daddy now?

Toph.
I don't think there's any need for changes there. I mean I could call him Tuofu using the Mandarin pronunciation like I did for Aang/Anang, but I don't see the necessity.
