This article about different perceptions of color by culture, jumping off from the Homeric texts that describe wine-dark seas and cornflower hair, got me thinking about the language and perceptions of color in Korean culture that I had almost given up on expressing in English. Korea has no native word for "green," you see, but rather uses "blue" to describe the sky, the forests, and the ocean alike. We had to borrow the Chinese word for green in order to separate it out linguistically, so it felt weird to have Korean characters who don't even know Chinese to think of and use the word "green." On the other hand, I thought, it would feel odd for English-language readers to see forests and leaves described as "blue." For that matter, Koreans call hair with a slight brown/yellowish sheen "yellow" which would call to mind blond hair for many English speakers but is actually still dark brown hair. But hey, if Homer can get away with wine-colored seas, why can't I ha ve blue forests and brown yellow hair, right?

Sign ups are open on the Marvel Femslash exchange! They will stay open until April 13 11:59pm PST. Many of the nominated relationships tags were non-starters for me (never saw that movie/show, don't know/care about that character, can't see the characters that way, too much age gap for me etc.), but hopefully I have enough pairings and media up to be matched on both requests and offers. I'm excited to see what comes up!

Also John Cho will play Spike in Netflix's live-action version of Cowboy Bebop! I never did get much into the anime but I'm ecstatic that John will be playing this iconic character and really looking forward to him being a too-cool-for-school cowboy.

So often when the matter of the height of medieval people is discussed on online forums, there is a notion that they were stunted and small.

From the archaeological evidence this is far from the truth. Yes they had food insecurity due to periods of famine caused by weather and war and animal sickness, but when all was going well, the men and women of medieval England were of the same height more or less as the people of the early and mid 20th century.

I did not know this! It changes how I think about historical height, that's for sure.

There is no such thing as a fully historically accurate movie. How could there be, when there is no one single fully authentic version of history? But each generation (maybe even each person) makes their own demands as to the kind of accuracies they do and do not need- what Simon Schama called selective fastidiousness - and that can change quite dramatically.

* The New Zealand Islamic Information Centre is running a campaign via Launchgood to raise funds for the victims of the Christchurch attack.

* There is also a different campaign run by NZ Council of Victim Support, via NZ-based crowdfunding site Givealittle. The site seems to be having issues right now, probably because of so many people accessing it.

Clone Wars is one of my favourite cartoons ever.

It is also a mess of unacknowledged but rampant colonialism, imperialism and both space- and IRL-racism: the fact that the Clones, who are slaves bred for war and scarificed in their millions are PoCs is only the most blatant.

The treatment of General Grievous (AKA Qymaen jai Shelaal, warleader of Kalee) is also a result of this distorting lens and of the chronic incapability of Lucas and Filoni to 1) reign in their white privilege and 2) write antagonists whithout making them stereotypical cackling, moustache-twirling villains.

This is a fantastic meta about Grievous's Legends background, his treatment in TCW and the disturbing parallels to victor-written histories in our own world.

[personal profile] stitchmediamix and [tumblr.com profile] diversehighfantasy, two of the most insightful commentators on fandom racism, were having a Twitter conversation on the racial empathy gap until, in a development so meta it feels like surrealist parody,(1) someone felt the need to add one of those "actually I'm not racist because..." replies.(2) In this case they evidently lost empathy for Finn when he "started firing on his own side."

Stitch has the post-game of this exchange, including responses that are on other threads and/or deleted later on, so refer to that thread for an analysis on why this bit of idiotic derailment is so indicative of fandom's problem with racism.

I'm just going to rant in the margins & footnotes )
