Cape Cod off-season

So my friend W had the winning bid in an auction for a few days at a beach house in Cape Cod in the off-season. Specifically, last week (May 6-10). Alas, Joy wasn't able to take time off of work (I'm able to work remotely half a day, and take the other half a day off, so I only used 1.5 vacation days for the trip). The place was vastly too large for W and me - 5 bedrooms, 5 full bathrooms, 2 half-baths, and an outdoor shower (which, surprisingly, I didn't use). While it is technically true that it rained every day of the trip, for the most part the rain didn't really impact us: rain on the Wednesday drive to Chatham was a pain; heavy rain on Thursday morning when I was working anyhow or light rain on Friday afternoon didn't matter, nor did heavy rain Saturday late night when I wouldn't have gone out anyhow. Light rain back in NYC when I was lugging my suitcase home was a bit annoying, but not tragic. I wonder how I'd have felt about the beach house if I knew that the asking price for rentals during the fall (labor day - new year's) was $15,000 a week (plus fees/taxes/etc). (W paid far less than that in the auction.) As it was, it was nice, if a bit sterile and far larger than we needed. I've got to get back to work, but wanted to note this now.

Even though it was off-season, downtown Chatham was not empty on Saturday, nor was Provincetown on Friday (although I know it gets even busier during peak season).

While Jules and I were in walmart yesterday I got the idea that I'd like to get an orchid. Kathy was telling me while I was in Florida with her about how easy they are to grow. Jules bought me this one as a mother's day gift. Score!

battels (BA-tuhlz) - (UK, some universities) fees charged by a college for board, provisions, and other living expenses.

Where "some" are specifically Oxford and Durham. Almost always used only in the plural. Origin unclear but possibly related to obsolete battle, to feed/fatten (an obsolete adjectival sense of battel is fertile/fruitful).

When it comes to governing a generation ship, do you prefer the Watsonian or Doylist strategy?

Speaking of trauma memoirs read in the author's own words, I just got Heavy by Kiese Laymon and quickly realized it was not the kind of thing to listen to in the bubble bath. I recommend spinning or weaving or drawing while listening. I haven't made my deliberation about it yet but the rec that made me download it talked about the way that publically confronting and exposing those who traumatized him (in a roundabout way, through this memoir, he goes into how impossible it is to get amends made in person) was an act of loving compassion for the author, for those people. The rec-er was a lesbian who almost 100% usually recommends only womens' and lesbians' work so I am prepared for this one to be exceptional.

It feels quite beautiful to me that I have a notes file labeled "burn book" which is for jotting down things I want to remember about people to remind myself why they might rub me the wrong way (to remind myself that I have reasons sometimes and not just vibes1

1: As a contextual note, it might be worth remembering that I lost the entire last three months of my diary of dating my abusive ex, and have had to piece together some of the "was it really that bad?" since then from trauma-touched memories and chatlogs. It was, I know it was, I remember it was, I wish I had more contemporary sources to draw from sometimes. Anyways.

The beautiful part is seeing the sorts of notes I've written most recently. My work bestie's favourite candy. The name of the girl my online friend's been gushing about. One of my DnD friend's favourite animals. The kinds of cliff bar my new friend with the allergies can actually eat.

I like that my burn book, my place to collect small little notes of things I get told or observe and want to remember, is mostly just so kind.

No pictures. I have nothing to offer this morning except words. Thinking of Noah and the fact that he will probably soon lose his mom. She has cancer, in a lot of places. There are such sad things in this world. But then I was outside a while ago doing the chicken chores and hearing the bird songs in the trees. That is a place full of life and hope. We have a lot of trees in our yard and it seemed like each individual tree had a bird in it broadcasting its song. Because I couldn't see any of the birds it felt the tree itself was making that sound. Each tree had its own song. Loud. Little tiny birds are capable of making such big sounds! I couldn't tell by sight who the birds hidden in the trees were but my merlin app said that there were northern house wrens, american redstarts, robins, white crowned sparrows, baltimore orioles and wood thrushes. The wood thrush was right in front of where I stood listening. I have heard that song many times in this yard over the years. A beautiful flute like song. I'm wearing the hearing aids again today. Going to try and get used to them. They say it takes one to 4 months (!) of wearing them before it feels normal. I'm going to give it a better try this time. If for no other reason than for the birds.

I've been noticing how alive with birds nature is right now. It's kind of amazing how devoid of birds we are in the winter. You can walk many miles in the woods in winter and not see or hear a single bird. But now the woods are full of them. Constant songs. I have a baby monitor in the chicken coop so I can hear what's going on in there and I have second baby monitor just outside it in the yard. Sitting here in my room I just now heard the wood thrush again.

Thinking about Noah and how people cope when they have terrible things happening. There has to be relief, some kind of relief or it will crush you.

I have other things I intend to write, let's see if i write them.

Separately: I like to go to record stores and find something I've never heard of before and on clearance. Yesterday it was Orchestral Manouvres In The Dark. Apparently they are one of the originators of Synth-Pop. Actually very very good.

driech [dreekh]

(especially of weather) dreary; bleak.

adjective

examples

1. If the weather was driech, Grace would sit on a sheltered bench, where one day a year or so back she had been joined by a gentleman of similar years (which was to say, eight or nine years younger than George). "Trip Trap" by Ian Rankin.
2. During the next three years (and that is a long driech time) I made many excuses for not going down to Eden Valley. The Dew of Their Youth by SR Crockett 1887

origin
Dreich (pronounced dreekh or dreech), the Scots word for wet, dull, and miserable weather, originates from Middle English and has roots in Old English (*drēog) and early Scandinavian, with usage recorded as early as 1420. Originally, it meant "enduring," "persistent," or "slow/tedious," which evolved to describe the unrelenting, slow-moving wet weather common in Scotland
