Reviewing Episodes 6 and 7 together because I was laid low by a cold last week.

Episode 6 had simply epic action that had me squeeing all over the place. It also totally vindicated my early and loud support for Linorra. The Chief letting Amon go to save Korra was the most stirring moment in an already exciting episode. Where is your Asami/Korra now, [livejournal.com profile] amyraine, you Equalist sympathizer?!

I was a bit disappointed that Lin was Tenzin's ex-girlfriend after all, but it helped to know that Pema's version of events was inaccurate. And Lin tried to put Pema in jail? What was the charge, boyfriend larceny, or was there more? If Lin is still looking for payback, of course, it doesn't get much better than doing the reincarnation of his dad. What, I'm just saying.

So the Equalists show their true colors as terrorists. I had kind of hoped that there were genuine social grievances behind the uprising and it would appear in the show, but with the season past the halfway point I'm not sure there's enough time. The writing does move very quickly, so it's not impossible.

In fact, in Episode 7 things move so quickly the story crossed the line between "fast-paced" and "rushed." I didn't particularly like the handling of Hiroshi Sato's true allegiance. The death of his wife was mentioned, then resolved in a single episode, and his sole known motivation was revenge without a connection to larger social issues. It left the character flat, and seemed mainly in place to give Asami some much-needed character development. On the other hand, PLATINUM MECHA. If Amon has some of those babies on hand, which seems a safe bet, the Equalist threat just got a whole lot scarier.

I did like the conflicts and the tentative resolution in the Makorrasami triangle. Those threads were a few episodes in the making, and were handled in a way that showcased the characters and their development. While I still think Korra's suspicions were on rather thin ground and could very well have blown up in her face, she showed dedication in pursuing even the smallest lead, and maturity in her consideration for Asami.

Speaking of things blowing up in one's face, Chief Beifong is goin' rogue! I look forward to her working more closely with Korra. Beifong's main objection to Korra was that the Avatar was disrupting the peace of the city. But now that she is no longer an officer of the law and the city is headed for hell anyway, Lin is going to want someone by her side who can crack the skulls that need cracking. I look forward to that, strictly for the character and story development, of course. *whistles*

On other aspects of character development (I am just full of awkward segues today), Tahno in the canon just seemed a sad, broken guy after his bending was removed, but Tahno in the fandom appears to be fast headed for Draco in Leather Pants territory. What is it with pale prettboys and fangirls? On the bright side, Korra showed her integrity once again in her sympathy for the guy. She was happy to get in her punches when he was a smug bully, but she won't kick an opponent who is down and out.

Ugh, the week passes so fast. I'm getting the usual mid-season lag in enthusiasm, but I do look forward to seeing Zuko and whether he's become a Badass Grandpa in his old age. Lunatique over and out.
