...that doesn't even seem to make sense in the context of blood-bending as established previously. O_o I mean, come on guys, blood-bending was pretty terrifying all on its own; you didn't need to add on, "Oh by the way, it also can temporarily remove powers."
I mean, think of all the things they COULD'VE done! Freak voidbending--introducing the idea of some people developing random freak bending powers that may or may not be passed down. (After all, it's been established with the sand and swampbenders that there's more out there than the four nations!) Somehow whatshisface chanced on the technique Aang did in the original series, with none of the other training or discipline, and it slowly wrecks him because he doesn't know how to handle it! Or it's actually a scam--the people he "stole" the bending from are actually moles who are playing along, because they believe in the movement and want it to succeed!
Those are just the things that pop up to my mind. And I find ALL OF THEM more satisfying than what you just described. Bummer.
