Wow, your post totally got me dragged into overlithe's article, which I found really fascinating (well, until it started being about Korra, which I don't watch and have little interest in).
Back when we were a tiny in the 90s, we actually did believe that fantasy was better than reality; we made it our motto in a fifth grade class assignment. Of course, growing up in an environment like ours, you can probably guess why. Escaping into an internal fantasy world was a favorite coping tactic by Erin, and I know it made her angry that that was considered infantile, since it was the only option available to her.
However, we aren't kids caught in that unwinnable cycle anymore, so now I find myself wanting to see more than just the binary ends of "stay in happy fantasy world FOREVAR" and "return to true real important world FOREVAR." Which is kind of what Infinity Smashed is all about, expanding those options and actually exploring the effect it'd have on people.
