I'm still procrastinating on working on the DS9 S1E06 review and the analysis of Éowyn's showdown with the Nazgûl, but because I am infinitely sidetrackable (SQUIRREL!) i have a vague idea of giving Book 1 of Legend of Korra the "Ember Island Players" treatment. It's all
sparklesquid's fault for linking all a dream, which is similar except with Amon and the Lieutenant.
In my idea the Krew gather round, looking forward to watching their adventures on this newfangled movie thing (or silent film, or radio drama?). They are outraged at how awful the "adaptation" is, with the unnecessarily time-consuming love triangle plot that was blown out of all proportion, the way they cut out Asami's motivation, the sensationalization of Hiroshi Sato's character (Asami is livid when her father is portrayed as wanting to kill her and contemplates legal action), and most of all, the way the movie ignores all the complexity of RC's situation calls Equalism a lie. Then they realize their story has been twisted for the sake of Republic City propaganda, and everyone starts contemplating legal action.
Because when you think about it Book 1: Air is the play in the EIP episode, except dead serious. The plot is full of holes, events and characters are distorted enough to be unbelievable, and in the end it's all about how Great and Wonderful everything is under Your Benevolent Government. Also, there is no real darkness and nothing bad ever happens, silly. But at least the special effects were good!
So, have I been preempted? I haven't found anything like this on FFN or AO3 yet, but if the fic exists I shall grumble mildly before I go and avidly read it. If not, I'm contemplating what the "real" story should be. The bloodbender thing needs to go, for instance, but then what about the whole Yakone's sons plotline? Part of me likes the genuine pathos in the story of two abused children growing up to reenact their father's life, but another part of me always thought it was too soap-operatic and contrived.
Also if I'm going to ditch the bloodbender storyline I'm going to have to come up with an actual origin story for Amon's energybending. Maybe I'll just leave it vague but imply the Spirit World was indeed involved, and maybe also imply that the way bending came back similarly involved the Spirit World in a much less simplistic way than the ending portrayed. Either the studio didn't know the real story, or left it out because it was uncomfortable for the Powers that Be.
Speaking of bloodbending, you can probably guess that Yakone's story will also be changed for this "authentic" version of events. When you think about it, the idea that one single gamebreaking bloodbender threatened the city's entire power structure was obviously a distortion that directed attention away from the very real rot in the city that gave Yakone that kind of power. In this version of events Aang's energybending of Yakone takes on very grey tones indeed, and... yeah, I think I'll keep Amon as Yakone's son. Not as sure about Tarrlok.
Also, any ideas for a title? I thought about taking the first episode title like "The Boy in the Iceberg" did, but "Welcome to Republic City" sounds a bit too touristy and campy. It attributes a sense of irony to the writers that they didn't have. Another idea is to leave the movie untitled and title the fic "Ember Island Studios Proudly Present:" or some such to show the intent to parody EIP.
