I don't think we'll ever find out, unfortunately, because there's no archeological evidence that I know of. (If I find out about any I'll definitely post about it!) We only know about the tats through Chinese records, complete with the usual horrified gasp of "Barbarians!" Scientists could find out a lot if there were any samples remaining, but flesh doesn't survive through milennia short of sudden freeze/deliberate or accidental mummification.
