Warm temperatures transform mighty glaciers into rushing rivers of snowmelt, which carve their own paths through the ground, moving quickly in some sense, but also going over the same ground for a long time and deepening the channel bit by bit. I don't honestly know what that's a metaphor for, but it sounds poetic and inspiring, probably, I think.

By the way, if you don't mind, what is your thesis about?
