I hadn't even thought about that, not having seen TNG, but you're totally right. I love it when two sympathetic characters are pitted against each other, but given the sheer weight of fandom history there was no way Sisko could come out on top. I think, though, those kinds of choices were ultimately the reason DS9 eventually stood on its own legs while remaining rooted in Trek lore.
