I am working my way through your Avatar essays, and I have to say that I really never considered your take on Mai. But I think you're right; I can't think of any other reason for her saving Zuko. I think the reason I don't consider it is that there's this expectation that the romantic heroine is super-sweet or changes her personality for the romantic interest. Mai does neither, and that means she can slide right through the expectations.
